Chinese children climb 800m cliff to get home from school

Authorities in south-west China have vowed to come to the aid of an isolated mountain village after photographs emerged showing the petrifying journey its children are forced to make to get to school.
To attend class, backpack-carrying pupils from Atuler village in Sichuan province must take on an 800-metre rock face, scrambling down rickety ladders and clawing their way over bare rocks as they go.The photographs were taken by Chen Jie, an award-winning Beijing News photographer whose pictures of last year’s deadly Tianjin explosions were recognised by the World Press Photo awards earlier this year.Chen, who spent three days visiting the impoverished community, said the perilous trek, which he undertook three times, was not for the faint of heart. “It is very dangerous. You have to be 100% careful,” he told the Guardian. “If you have any kind of accident, you will fall straight into the abyss.”
So steep was the climb that Zhang Li, a reporter from China’s state broadcaster CCTV who was also dispatched to the mountain, burst into tears as she attempted to reach Atuler village.Images of their terrifying and potentially deadly 90-minute descent went viral on the Chinese internet this week after they were published in a Beijing newspaper.
Chen used his WeChat account to describe the moment he first witnessed the village’s 15 school children, aged between six and 15, scaling the cliff. “There is no doubt I was shocked by the scene I saw in front of me,” he wrote, adding that he hoped his photographs could help change the village’s “painful reality”.

NC leader Bimalendra Nidhi informed that the parties agreed on NC’s proposal of finalizing the regulation through consensus rather voting process.Similarly, UML chief whip Bhanubhakta Dhakal said that they agreed to finalize the parliament work regulation consensus after the budget presentation.On the other hand, Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal chief whip Shivji Yadav added that the dispute over the number was unnecessary, saying that the 15-member provision for the committee was referential after the new election of the parliament. The ruling and the opposition parties are still at odds on how many members should be there on the parliamentary special hearing committee (SHC), further delaying the formation of the important committee.Both sides remained rigid in their stance over the numbers as the ruling CPN (UML) and CPN-Maoist (Centre) are strongly advocating for a 15-member committee while the opposition Nepali Congress is pushing for 75 members.The ruling parties are stressing on 15 members taking recourse to the provision of the constitution for the same while opposition NC wants the 75-member committee stressing on the proportional representation of parliament members and the provision of the inclusion similar to other parliament committees.A meeting for the same was called at the initiation of the parliament speaker Onsari Gharti today.The parties were working out to finalize it before the budget scheduled for tomorrow but could not do so today.The Maoist (Centre) chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal following the meeting shared that they agreed to reach to the agreement after tomorrow’s budget.
